Note that most locos had the windows on their engine access doors and cab quarter windows plated out BEFORE leaving BN service.
Locomotives used in the F40PHL-2 rebuilds:
Morrison-Knudson (now Motive Power Inc. of Boise Idaho) built five F40PHL-2s especially for Tri-Rail, the first completed one rolling off the line in 1988.

M-K began constructing the F40PHL-2s by purchasing and rebuilding five GP40s of Penn Central heratage (to become Conrail locomotives, then sold to Itel Corp). The locomotives were upgraded with EMD Dash 2 electonics, and a shaft driven HEP generator was added to provide power to trailing coaches. The gastanks were also shortened to 2600 gallons from 3600. It is unknown why this was done, it may have been to accomodate the engine room's side access steps.

Finally, the ex-BN F45 carbodies were cut down to fit the GP40 frames, and the external access panels were re-arranged to fit the shorter body.

It is unknown why, but the cab sub-assemblies were mixed and matched between locos. For instance, BN #6637 donated it's carbody to Tri-Rail #801, however, it's cab is mounted on Tri-Rail #805!

Note: It is commonly thought that the Tri-Rail F40PHL-2s are EMD F40PHs rebuilt with F45 cabs and anticlimbers. This is
incorrect!! Further investigation confirms no such locomotive exists. The only F40PH locomotives ever to be rebuilt with anticlimbers are CDAC's ex-Amtrak F40s.
